Martis Fire
This fire burned about 14,500 acres just west of Reno, NV during two weeks in June of 2001. Keeping Interstate 80 closed for about four hours on the first day, it put a considerable amount of smoke in the air. As the following pictures will show, the damage and loss of watershed was enormous. These pictures were all taken from Interstate 80 about fifteen miles west of Reno. The first three pictures were taken a few days after the fire was controlled and the rest were taken a week later. The fact that the fire is still smoldering is evident in the first three pictures. Also, the ground was covered with a gray ash, making it look like a Moonscape, but when I returned to take the rest of the Photos it had been washed away by the rain.
