dscn1738.jpg (67492 bytes) This picture and the next, represents my interest in doing public service work. I love going out into the desert where there is no McDonald's or 7-11, and setting up a radio for communication. Nothing beats the quiet and solitude. Well, at least until the race vehicles start going by, but that's fun too! This was an off road race, and I was located a few miles south of Fernley, NV

p5280003.jpg (62557 bytes) This was also an off road race, but the location was about twenty miles north of Yerington, NV. The antenna seen in the background is called a J-Pole, and can easily be constructed using about ten dollars worth of materials. It works quite well, and I have constructed mine so that it can be easily set up and broken down. Information on my J-Pole is here.

p8200002.jpg (78031 bytes) This is at Pyramid Lake during a triathlon held every year. It isn't as remote as it looks, because the Marina is only a mile or so away.
DSCN2517.jpg (133710 bytes) This is a picture of me in my shack. (5/2005)
This, and the next three pictures show a race I did on August 25th & 26th, 2006. This is the evening before the big day!
This is my station, I had to use my wife's van, as my car wouldn't hold the camping gear. This race is called the Best In The Desert; people from all over the world participate in it.
These are some of the support vehicles for the race participants. As the day wore on, it got real crowded!
This 500+ mile long course runs through some of the most desolate and rugged terrain in Nevada. Starting in Las Vegas, it runs through the desert, ending just outside Reno.
My cat saw me tuning my HF radio, so she thought she'd try it. She had a lot of fun turning the dial!
