This picture and the next, represents my interest in doing
public service work. I love going out into the desert where there is no
McDonald's or 7-11, and setting up a radio for communication. Nothing
beats the quiet and solitude. Well, at least until the race vehicles
start going by, but that's fun too! This was an off road race, and
I was located a few miles south of Fernley, NV |
 |
This was also an off road race, but the location was about
twenty miles north of Yerington, NV. The antenna seen in the background
is called a J-Pole, and can easily be constructed using about ten
dollars worth of materials. It works quite well, and I have constructed
mine so that it can be easily set up and broken down. Information on my
J-Pole is here. |

This is at Pyramid Lake during a triathlon held every
year. It isn't as remote as it looks, because the Marina is only a mile or so away. |

This is a picture of me in my shack. (5/2005) |

This, and the next three pictures show a race I did on
August 25th & 26th, 2006. This is the evening before the big day! |
 |
This is my station, I had to use my wife's van, as my car
wouldn't hold the camping gear. This race is called the Best In The
Desert; people from all over the world participate in it. |
 |
These are some of the support vehicles for the race
participants. As the day wore on, it got real crowded! |
 |
This 500+ mile long course runs through some of the most
desolate and rugged terrain in Nevada. Starting in Las Vegas, it runs
through the desert, ending just outside Reno. |

My cat saw me tuning my HF radio, so she thought she'd try
it. She had a lot of fun turning the dial! |
